The kit included plans, instructions, lumber, and other necessary building supplies. The Holleman House is an example of the “Americus” plan from Sears. It is a modified Foursquare dwelling with Craftsman-style detailing. The porch posts are classic “Americus” features, as is the interior plan.
\r\n
\r\nWilliam and Georgia Holleman purchased an unimproved parcel in the developing Cameron Park neighborhood in 1925. Deed restrictions instructed homeowners and developers to build a house costing at least $3,000 and standing twenty feet back from the street. The Hollemans likely built the house right away and moved in with their then-teenaged daughter. William Holleman, a salesman, managed a local outlet of Armour & Company, a wholesaler of meat and other provisions. They lived in the house until 1933, when they lost it due to Depression-era debts.
\r\n
\r\nca. 1925","sponsor":null,"accessinfo":"","lede":"","website":"","related_resources":["William and Georgia Holleman House Landmark Designation Ordinance and Report"],"factoids":[],"files":{"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/fullsize/921c11509040d717d97b3700a8b7d34d.jpg":{"id":803,"mime-type":"image/gif","title":"Sears Catalogue, Americus Style, 1928","description":"","thumbnail":"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/square_thumbnails/921c11509040d717d97b3700a8b7d34d.jpg"},"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/fullsize/0981565334c62f7096497b5a715c7ebe.jpg":{"id":805,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Cameron Park Plat, 1915","description":"","thumbnail":"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/square_thumbnails/0981565334c62f7096497b5a715c7ebe.jpg"},"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/fullsize/c5e5ac5dbaab804e9960942f7d3fc253.jpg":{"id":846,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"William and Georgia Holleman House","description":"Image courtesy of David Strevel, Capital City Camera Club.","thumbnail":"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/square_thumbnails/c5e5ac5dbaab804e9960942f7d3fc253.jpg"}}}
