The Kares often hosted other faculty and guest lecturers at their home, including a 1964 lunch for Dr. Francis Crick prior to his visiting seminar on campus. Crick was part of the famous Watson and Crick duo who discovered the structure of DNA in 1953. The Kares' daughter, Susan, who spent her middle school years in the house on Barfield Ct, would later develop the original typeface and icons for the first Apple Macintosh personal computer.
\r\n
\r\nArchitect Raymond Sawyer designed this midcentury modern house. Sawyer was one of many designers who studied at the NC State University School of Design during the program's early 1950s heyday as an engine of the Modernist movement. The building incorporates many features exemplifying Modernist design principles, including its modest size, open layout, flat roof, simple detailing, use of natural materials, de-emphasized main entrance, and integration with the surrounding terrain. The design brings the outside in while providing privacy from the street through carefully located and sized picture windows.
\r\n
\r\nDate: 1962","sponsor":null,"accessinfo":"","lede":"","website":"","related_resources":["Dr. Morley and Carol Kare House Landmark Designation Report and Ordinance"],"factoids":[],"files":{"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/fullsize/09404e2fca62263b7c5ebb7b904a0670.jpg":{"id":1119,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Dr. Morley and Carol Kare House","description":"Front west elevation","thumbnail":"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/square_thumbnails/09404e2fca62263b7c5ebb7b904a0670.jpg"},"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/fullsize/33038fda2f9502756bf3d6ca4d120beb.jpg":{"id":1120,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Dr. Morley and Carol Kare House","description":"South main entrance detail","thumbnail":"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/square_thumbnails/33038fda2f9502756bf3d6ca4d120beb.jpg"},"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/fullsize/2961f787413df5c89fe981afcb976733.jpg":{"id":1122,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Dr. Morley and Carol Kare House","description":"South side elevation","thumbnail":"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/square_thumbnails/2961f787413df5c89fe981afcb976733.jpg"},"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/fullsize/6d7d57c3bfe151a8715fa991533a329c.jpg":{"id":1124,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Dr. Morley and Carol Kare House","description":"Southeast corner elevation","thumbnail":"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/square_thumbnails/6d7d57c3bfe151a8715fa991533a329c.jpg"},"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/fullsize/4dabd45fab3031fdcda64a44e96cb404.jpg":{"id":1123,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Dr. Morley and Carol Kare House","description":"Northeast corner elevation","thumbnail":"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/square_thumbnails/4dabd45fab3031fdcda64a44e96cb404.jpg"},"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/fullsize/11174f3fc9e547208c0d9b23b9db2a31.jpg":{"id":1121,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Dr. Morley and Carol Kare House","description":"North side elevation","thumbnail":"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/square_thumbnails/11174f3fc9e547208c0d9b23b9db2a31.jpg"},"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/fullsize/1dc8d1e4dc24592e6f460be7476ef4ac.jpg":{"id":1125,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Dr. Morley and Carol Kare House","description":"Entry foyer detail","thumbnail":"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/square_thumbnails/1dc8d1e4dc24592e6f460be7476ef4ac.jpg"},"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/fullsize/25bded8da3482ebb8cfea48474b743f2.jpg":{"id":1126,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Dr. Morley and Carol Kare House","description":"Courtyard detail","thumbnail":"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/square_thumbnails/25bded8da3482ebb8cfea48474b743f2.jpg"},"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/fullsize/f678c596be8e3661f2c3ba80c503a2fd.jpg":{"id":1127,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Dr. Morley and Carol Kare House","description":"Living room and screened porch detail","thumbnail":"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/square_thumbnails/f678c596be8e3661f2c3ba80c503a2fd.jpg"},"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/fullsize/d6743d30370362beb41aa1b343ecd869.jpg":{"id":1128,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Dr. Morley and Carol Kare House","description":"Hall stairway detail","thumbnail":"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/square_thumbnails/d6743d30370362beb41aa1b343ecd869.jpg"},"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/fullsize/d32b210ae530890459c5c798b292d1e7.jpg":{"id":1129,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Dr. Morley and Carol Kare House","description":"View across house","thumbnail":"https://mail.raleighhistoric.org/files/square_thumbnails/d32b210ae530890459c5c798b292d1e7.jpg"}}}
