Shaw University

The founding of the school which would become Shaw University in 1865 profoundly shaped African American life in Raleigh and across the nation. Just months after the Civil War ended, Union veteran and missionary Henry Tupper established a school for newly freed men and women. Over its first 50 years, Shaw expanded beyond general education to include professional programs that met the needs of the Black community, including schools of pharmacy and law.

Located along the boundary between Raleigh’s Third and Fourth Wards, Shaw University became a major center of learning, leadership, and opportunity. Today, it continues to educate students and stands as one of the oldest Historically Black College and University in the United States.
